Braces for Teeth Straightening

There are a wide range of treatment methods for teeth straightening, and the great news is that they work better and are more comfortable than ever before. In fact, braces are no longer a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, you have an array of options to choose from for teeth straightening:

  • Traditional metal braces: Traditional braces are the tried and true method when it comes to teeth straightening. Traditional braces straighten teeth through a system of metal brackets, archwires, and elastic bands. The brackets adhere to the teeth using a special dental glue that keeps them in place. The archwires create a gentle pressure that helps the teeth slide into their correct positions overtime.

Traditional braces are known for doing their job quickly and efficiently, especially in cases of severe misalignment. They are also the most cost-effective when it comes to teeth straightening treatments. While there are some restrictions when it comes to traditional braces, they are manageable. For example, there are some food restrictions, which means you should not eat taffy-like candy or gum, as well as hard or uncooked vegetables during treatment. Traditional braces also require the rubber bands to be changed every four-to-six weeks.

  • Self-ligating braces: Self-ligating braces are one of the most advanced systems when it comes to the world or braces. They are much like traditional braces; however, elastic, rubber bands, or metal ties are not present because they are not required for its effectiveness. Instead, special metal clips are used to hold the archwires to the brackets.

These types of braces work quickly and efficiently. Fewer appointments are required, as they do not need to have rubber bands replaced. However, there are still food restrictions for self-ligating braces.

  • Ceramic braces: Ceramic braces are a teeth straightening treatment that have clear brackets. Ceramic braces are ideal for patients who prefer a less visible appearance; however, they are more fragile so it is important to keep this in mind when chewing, playing sports, etc.
  • Invisalign: Invisalign is a very popular teeth straightening method, as the aligners used for the treatment are virtually invisible. They are clear aligners that are custom-made to fit over your teeth, and don’t require traditional brackets or wires. About every two weeks, the old set of aligners will need to be thrown out and replaced with a newer, straighter set. This allows the aligners to gradually move the teeth into straighter positions.

The aligners must be removed for brushing, flossing, and eating. Therefore, there are no food restrictions throughout the Invisalign treatment.

While there are tons of advantages to Invisalign, the aligners must be removed and replaced regularly, which means that they require a certain level of responsibility. The aligners need to be worn for at least 22 hours a day in order for them to take effect. In addition, Invisalign is only recommended for moderate cases.
